WHAT ABOUT MUSCLE LOSS?
If you are not physically active, after the age of thirty you begin to lose about 3 to 5 percent of muscle mass a decade, with a parallel loss of strength. Increasing age, being physically inactive, and having decreased hormone levels contribute to losing muscle mass and strength and can lead to a condition called sarcopenia, a Greek word meaning âpoverty of the flesh.â Women have a greater risk of developing sarcopenia than men because generally women have less muscle mass to start with and there-fore muscle loss has a greater impact. It's one of the primary reasons that older women become frail and weak.
